Moth print

Over 90% of Aotearoa’s moths and butterflies, or Lepidoptera, are found nowhere else in the world. About 98% of those 2,000 species are moths. We have a lot of unique moths, some of them don’t even fly.

This one here is a female Declana atronivea, or North Island lichen moth, or te pūrēhua pukoko o Te Ika a Māui.

Out of 180,000 butterfly and moth species recorded around the whole world – which is 10% of all the living organisms that people have given names to – this North Island lichen moth is the only one where its wings markings don’t mirror each other. Isn’t that incredible?

Also, her babies look like bird poo, which is pretty handy for not getting eaten by birds.
